TEAM RAHAL'S KENNY BRACK CLAIMS 4th IN IROC OPENER
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA . . . Kenny Brack, driver of Team Rahal's Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola and the 2000 CART Rookie of the Year, made his return to the True Value International Race of Champions (IROC) series Friday afternoon with a fourth place finish at Daytona International Speedway. Brack led one lap (lap seven) and ran consistently among the lead cars for the 40-lap, 100-mile event.
For Brack this is his second time running in IROC. He finished sixth overall in 1999; the highest finish of any open wheel racer that year. Friday's fourth place result equaled his top previous IROC result that also came at Daytona in February of 1999.
The race was won by Dale Jarrett of NASCAR followed by Ricky Rudd (NASCAR) and IRL driver Eddie Cheever. Brack was running third but lost a spot on the final lap when he had to slow avoid an on track incident between Dale Earnhardt who was leading at the time and Cheever
"At least I was able to bring the car back in one piece," said Brack. "I was hanging tough and waiting for the last lap to make my move when things got crazy. Today was a good warm-up for the CART season opener in Mexico. Running with the level of competition that is here is a great mental and physical preparation for the challenges of the upcoming season."
The 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series opens with the inaugural Monterrey (Mexico) Grand Prix March 9-11.
Brack was the lone representative of the CART FedEx Championship Series racing in the IROC opener. Defending CART champion Gil de Ferran of Team Penske missed the first race due to injuries sustained in testing.
Friday's IROC race will be broadcast on ESPN Sunday afternoon February 18th at 5:00 PM EST.
The True Value IROC series matches 12 championship caliber drivers to compete in equalized racecars. The cars are differentiated by their brilliant paint colors and outfitted with identical radial race tires. The four-race series awards points according to finishing positions. At the end of the fourth event the points are tallied and a champion is declared.
Team Rahal is a franchise member of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). Headquartered in Hilliard, Ohio, the team co-owned by three-time CART Champion Bobby Rahal and CBS LATE SHOW host David Letterman currently fields a pair of Championship Cars for Max Papis and Kenny Brack in the CART FedEx Championship Series. The 90-member team enjoys primary sponsorship from Miller Brewing Company and the Shell/Texaco Alliance with the Shell brand.
